Taliban Kill Man, Beat 11 Others in Takhar

Local sources in Takhar province say Taliban fighters shot dead a man named “Faiz Mohammad” and beat at least 11 others in Lajda village of Farkhar district.

According to the sources, Faiz Mohammad, an elderly man and a resident of the area, had tried to prevent the construction of a restaurant on his private land; a project that was reportedly being implemented with the support of the Taliban district governor, Shamsuddin Humayun. The Taliban killed him on charges of resisting land grabbing.

The sources added that after this incident, a number of local residents, in protest of this action, transferred Faiz Mohammad’s body to Taloqan city and refused to bury it, but were forced to bury it following Taliban threats.

Following the clashes, at least one local resident was seriously injured, and the victim’s family has been threatened by the Taliban district governor to refrain from pursuing the case legally.
